SuperSonics that was commonplace in the military fighter, but only ever Concorde airliner supersonic. Now, NASA, Orbital ATK jointly achieve a new breakthrough, an hour to fly from New York to London is no longer a dream.
According to the United Kingdom, the daily mail reported, NASA Langley Research Center in Virginia, Orbital ATK successfully tests a supersonic combustor 3D printing, is expected to create a plane with a speed of up to 5500 kilometers, equivalent to 4.5 times the speed of sound.
The whole testing process lasted more than 20 days, the project is extremely rich, including in particular a history's longest propulsion wind tunnel test.
The combustion chamber is in the Allegheny ballistic laboratory in Rocket Center, West Virginia assembly using "powder bed integration" (PBF) process.
First, a layer of metal alloy powder is placed underneath the printer, and then use laser or electron beam, operate in accordance with pre-determined trajectory, placed second after the melting metal powder layer successive operations, until the entire print, and finally remove excess powder, be smooth, precision components.
Orbital ATK says the technology a few years ago would have been unthinkable.
PS:Orbital ATK is to the international space station delivering supplies for NASA's space one of the private companies.
