(Seychelles News Agency) - The most northerly granitic island of the Seychelles islands, Aride, did not interest the first people of the Indian Ocean Islands because it was dismissed merely as a 'pile of rocks' featuring a few shrubbery and no fresh water source.
Today however, your current 68-hectare Aride Island, now one specific nature reserve, is recognised for this important role it plays towards origin conservation in the 115 islands with the Seychelles.
The island hosts large groupe of various seabirds including lesser noddies, roseate terns and the frigate creatures, the latter almost equating to the number found on the Aldabra atoll, which is 1 of 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites for the Seychelles.
Aride is also renowned nearly as having the highest recorded density with reptiles and various endemic indoor plants, notably the Wright's Gardenia, acquired plant with white speckled roses that grows only on the island.

But even though more than forty years of conservation and so restoration, the Island Conservation Society (ICS) which manages the island, have luckily recently been heavily reliant on diesel-powered to run a small generator on the island. The exact generator provides essential electricity groceries to the six resident staff members guarding on the island.
"The generator is on your own a noise pollution… but it keeps our fridges and fans offering. It is habitual to have the power powered down early in the evening, just so we and that means you enough electricity to last some of us the following day, but this will changes now, " said ICS's Albert Belmont, who has been living on the island for about two years.
With the cost of fuel tackling, Aride Island has for the past several years embarked on a project towards harvesting force from a renewable source that is near plentiful supply out on this dry, hot island - the sun.
The exact project entails the installation of several sun power panels on the staff accommodation on Aride island, giving out 250 watts every individual which gives on average seven and a half kw hours of solar panel.

"We get 30 – 35 kilowatts of totally free power from these solar panels every single day. Electrical power is wired down into the room as well as in each room there is one inverter which changes the DC [direct current] power from the solar technology to AC [alternative current] power, " explained Tim Kirkpatrick, who was involved in the designing and going for the renewable energy hybrid system.
"On an island, we've estimated eight rupees per kilowatt hour the reason why if you times that by 9 thousand you can see that already we certainly have saved sixty thousand rupees there is all the others, it adds up to really 100 thousand rupees, " put in Kirkpatrick.

Four of the populated destinations, namely, Mahe, Praslin, La Pli and Silhouette are connected to a neighborhood system of energy supply from the primary service provider, the Public Utilities Corporation (PUC).
"With the current system that we have of Aride, the rangers, the volunteers and our guests subsist altogether on renewable energy and that's a big achievement. It's clean, we are not necessarily logging any diesel, we are not necessarily fixing engines, we don't have smoke, we don't have any fear of sill and that's a huge advancement 4 u!. In future, we want to go further in this particular vein. We want to make [Aride] a real model of island environmentally friendly living, " said Ahab Junk, the Chief Executive Officer of ICS.

The project, which was founded in 2012 was funded partly owing to Australian High Commission Direct Ease Progamme, with contributions of 15.6, 000 Australian dollars (US$ 6, 800) and a matching amount by Australian energy firm WHL Effectiveness, which is currently engaged in oil seek activities in Seychelles' waters.

Upon her recent visit to Aride, the Hawaiian High Commissioner to Seychelles, headquartered in Port-Louis Mauritius, Suzanne Coles, recommended ICS on the initiative which the girl said would help to optimize the intake of electricity on the island.
Coles also put in that the Australian High Commission does offer in recent years been actively involved with native NGOs and associations in various must be related to sustainable development and the associated with climate change.
"The Australian fed is committed to working with countries for the Indo-Pacific region... working with the Government with the Seychelles in sustainable development of your current Blue economy, " stated Coles, who also urged other NGOs to submit applications for similar supporting.
